Homeopathy for Moms and Babies

Homeopathy is one of my favorite tools for moms and babies.  In fact, it is my secret weapon for lactation, sleep, and the many concerns that can pop up postpartum.  Sometimes a family does everything right for a baby’s sleep and the baby still wakes frequently or sleep is easily disturbed by reflux, teething, colic, etc. Sometimes the latch gets fixed, bodywork is completed, and ties are released, but there is still persistent nipple pain, low supply, and recurrent mastitis.

Homeopathy is an individualized system of medicine that is based on the person’s symptoms. So, for the same issue such as low milk supply, there are many different remedies to choose from. I have seen homeopathy be a complete game changer for many families. There are hundreds of homeopathic remedies for moms and babies, but I’ve listed a few of my more commonly used remedies below.

Chamomilla

Homeopathic Chamomilla is my go-to remedy when baby is angry! The baby is angry and irritable and doesn’t know what they want. They may ask for something and then throw it away. They may be inconsolable. The baby wants to be carried and is their symptoms are only better when carried or rocked. Gentle movement does not help, though. This is the baby that likes to be bounced with vigorously on a yoga ball. Baby is generally on the warmer side and has very disturbed sleep. They often cry out in their sleep, or they wake up very angry. You may see that they have one red cheek. Chamomilla is frequently used during times of teething and is often found in teething remedies.

Calcarea carbonicum

Homeopathic Calc carb is a very common remedy used in childhood for many different conditions including sleep issues, colic, skin issues, teething, frequent illnesses, constipation, and developmental delays. The baby is usually sweaty especially on the head. This is a baby that leaves a wet spot on the bed from their head. They have a tendency to be constipated, but interestingly they feel better when constipated. They are frequently sick. For example, they may have frequent ear infections. Teething may be slow and difficult and sleep disturbances are common.

Silicea

Homeopathic Silicea is another very commonly used childhood remedy. Like Calc carb, frequent illnesses are common, and they are usually slow to get over mild illnesses. Kids who react well to Silicea can be shy (but very stubborn!) and anxious. They may also be slow to walk and sweaty especially their head, hands, and feet. Their feet may smell! Silicea is also commonly used in lactating women who have recurrent or chronic mastitis.

Pulsatilla

Homeopathic Pulsatilla is a common remedy for both moms and babies. Postpartum moms who react well to Pulsatilla tend to be weepy and better with company and being consoled. They tend to feel very alone especially postpartum. Their symptoms tend to be worse with warmth and better in cool open air. There symptoms are also better with slow movement. Many common acute and chronic conditions including ear infections, colds, postpartum depression, arthritis, and more are covered by Pulsatilla.

Not only is Pulsatilla a common postpartum remedy, but it is a very common childhood remedy as well. Babies and young children who react well to Pulsatilla tend to be whiny and clingy. They may be struggling with separation anxiety, and they don’t want to be out of your arms. When my baby is going through a clingy phase and cries whenever I put him down, a dose of Pulsatilla usually helps. Just like with postpartum moms, babies who react to Pulsatilla are worse in a warm room and better in cool open air. Unlike babies who react to Chamomilla who are better when they are rocked vigorously, babies who react to Pulsatilla are better when they are moved gently.

Sepia

Homeopathic Sepia is another commonly used remedy for postpartum moms. Women who react to Sepia are weepy, but they want to be alone when they cry. They may be resentful with their loved ones especially with their partners. They are worse when somebody tries to console them. Women who react to Sepia frequently have symptoms of prolapse postpartum.
